Significance of The Gujrat Carnage

Almost seven months have elapsed after the Gujarat carnage. But the fire is still burning—both in the figurative and literal sense. The BJP has been bent on holding an immediate election in Gujarat to reap the fruits of the planned anti-Muslim carnage. But their 'burning desire' has received some sort of a jolt. The Central Election Commissioner has played a spoilsport—he has not found the present conditions of Gujarat fit for holding an immediate election. So he has become the number one enemy of the BJP and Sangh Parivar. And that he is a Christian has become his chief sin in the eyes of the Sangh Parivar. The much -hyped 'Gaurav Yatra' of the blue-eyed boy of the Sangh Parivar, Narendra Modi has started to rattle ahead installing fear in the minds of the minority Muslim community in its way which, by the way, is the main purpose of this 'March of Pride' (Gaurav Yatra) It is beyond question that the BJP and Sangh Parivar are flexing their muscles to spread this 'pride' all over India in the Gujarat way which is their 'pride'.

It is now proved beyond doubt that the recent incident of Gujarat has not been just another addition to the numerous Hindu-Muslim communal riots with which the Indian history is tarnished. It has been a planned, organised programme of genocide carried out against the Muslim population of Gujarat in which the government administration and the police administration have played the role of direct abettor. It is also clear now that there has been a meticulous and prolonged preparation of the total Sangh Parivar behind this carnage. All these facts have imparted a sinister character to the recent incidents of Gujarat and these incidents have sent an ominous message to the Indian working class and the common mass.

The ominous, dangerous message inherent in the recent incidents of Gujarat has arrived so clearly and pronouncedly that it is impossible not to take note of it. And all the protesting forces have noted it with varying concerns. That is why the phrases like, 'the laboratory of Hinduvta', 'the footsteps of Fascism', etc have been used by the protesting forces to characterise the incidents of Gujarat . But in spite of these characterisations the concerns reflected in the protesting forces have been varied and moreover do not seem to have totally grasped the real nature of the threat. This brings into focus a general weakness in the present protests against the Gujarat carnage and against the sinister machinations of the Sangh Parivar. The Indian revolutionary communists must take note of this so that the protest movement can be built up on a solid and correct basis.

It is quite noticeable that almost all the forces that have come out to protest against the carnage in Gujarat have pointed to the planned Muslim genocide to expose the real role of the BJP and Sangh Parivar. It is undoubtedly true that an organised and planned genocide has been carried out against the Muslim population in Gujarat . It is also undoubtedly true that those who are characterising the recent incidents of Gujarat as "communal riots" are shutting their eyes from the truth and are practically shielding the truth that is helping the BJP and the Sangh Parivar. The characterisation of Muslim genocide is more nearer to the truth than the characterisation of communal riots. But does the characterisation of Muslim genocide tell us everything; reveal the truth in its totality?

In this context it must be remembered that the as a political party BJP differs from all other established political parties. The BJP is a wing of the Sangh Parivar or to be exact, of RSS. The BJP is the political wing of RSS and is controlled by the central leadership of RSS. Along with this it should not be forgotten that RSS with its entire wing including the BJP is the representative and protector of the interests of the ruling Indian big bourgeoisie and big landlord class. The ruling Indian big bourgeoisie has always been dependent on the imperialists. During the last decade this dependence of the Indian big bourgeoisie on imperialism, especially on US imperialism has increased and has assumed a dangerous dimension. The imperialist globalisation is pushing the continuously intensifying contradictions of the incomplete Indian democratic revolution inherent in the Indian society more and more towards an eruptive situation and a tendency is manifestly growing within the Indian ruling camp to confront the intensifying contradictions in an autocratic, fascist way. The RSS as a whole that obviously includes BJP, represents this tendency of the Indian ruling camp and is implementing a programme based on the demands of this tendency. This programme is a programme of direct onslaught against the Indian masses including the Indian working class and the peasantry. And that onslaught has already begun. The quickening of the pace of "economic reforms", the spurt of de-nationalisations and de-investments, the increased infiltration of imperialism in the agricultural sector, positive moves to saffronise the education and similar other steps clearly indicate the starting of the onslaught. The genocide against the Muslim population is a part of the total programme and not the whole. Hence if the protests are kept limited only against the Muslim-genocide, then these will surely fail to reflect the totality of the Fascist attack. We should keep in mind that the Fascist attack of the German National Socialist Party under the leadership of Hitler started with a programme of genocide of Jews, but within a very short time one by one the German Communists, the German working class and ultimately the whole of the German toiling mass became targets of this Fascist attack of Hitler. Hence we will be seriously mistaken if we loose sight of the overall aggressive onslaught of RSS and all its branch organisations including BJP and consider a part of the attack as the whole.

Can this be said that the anti-fascist fighting forces of India have now gathered sufficient strength by which these will be able to effectively resist the Fascist attacks of the Sangh Parivar? As things stand now, it does not require deep insight to say 'no' to this question. The different spontaneous protests against the Gujarat carnage that had been observed during this period revealed their inherent weakness. In these protests the overwhelming main rallying force had been petty-bourgeois intelligentsia. While in no way minimising the importance and significance of these protests in the present juncture, it must also be drawn into notice that these protests almost totally failed to rally round the vast majority of the Indian working class and the peasantry, potentially the front -ranking fighting forces in the present Indian scene. The vast majority of these potentially front- ranking fighting forces were seen to remain almost totally passive. Will it be possible to build up any sort of real resistance struggle against the Fascist onslaught without the participation of these by far the majority and potentially front-ranking anti-fascist fighting forces, especially of the working class? Of course not. Hence, at the present moment, the Marxist-Leninists of India are faced with the main task of making these forces, especially the working class, conscious of the danger of Fascism ands drawing these forces in the resistance struggles against the attacks.

The non-participation and passivity of the vast majority of the Indian working class and the peasantry in the resistance struggles against the fascist machinations of RSS , BJP etc. is so apparent that the present protest struggles are suffering from a sense of helplessness. And from this sense of helplessness have grown a number of illusions and false hopes. The most harmful of these is the false hope that Fascist advance can be resisted in the constitutional way— that by engineering a spilt in the ruling NDA government and bringing it down it will be possible to install a new government at the centre which will stall the aggressive advance of the Hinduvta squad. It must be remembered that Fascism is a negation of the bourgeois democracy and its main plank is non-constitutionalism. Fascism skilfully plays on the loss of faith of the masses on bourgeois constitutional path and wins its mass support. This is what is exactly happening in India now and the Gujarat genocide has amply shown how much the bourgeois constitutional norms has been openly thrown into the winds by the Hinduvta squad. Hence it is an absolute illusion to hope that the Fascist aggression of Hinduvta can be resisted through the constitutional way and the history of India 's recent past has amply proved this. The electoral might of Congress, Samajwadi Party etc. and of CPI (M) could not thwart the rise of BJP to the central governmental power.

But illusions cannot replace truth; false hopes can never have the power of illuminating the path to victory. Marxists are duty-bound not to harbour or propagate any illusions at any point of time and to face the truth always, however unpalatable it may at any moment of history. The truth in the present Indian condition is that the present strength of the anti-fascist camp of India is not sufficient to put up any meaningful resistance against the fascist campaign of the RSS squad, because the principle fighting forces have not been mobilised in the fighting army. They can and must be mobilised in the fighting army and this is the task of the day. Without taking appropriate steps to accomplish this task of the day the search for any number of artificial, illusory paths will not solve the problem. The revolutionary Marxist-Leninists of India will have to concentrate their efforts to accomplish this task. If they can do that in the right way then the Indian masses will certainly be able not only to resist, but also to defeat the Fascist forces if not tomorrow, then day after.

US imperialism, Indian big bourgeoisie and the big landlords fleece the Indian masses at their sweet will!
